Don’t Dig Your Grave With Your Fork And Knife

mein teil Dont Dig Your Grave With Your Fork And KnifeDon’t dig your grave with your fork and knife!

That was the sign on the wall my attention was led to going out of a health facility a few weekends ago.  It didn’t made sense to me until dinner that evening…while I was holding my fork and knife.

Then, I got it. It was funny at first and then as the conversation got real serious to where healthy living became the subject. By the time we got to our desert the fork is barely moving.

On the news, you will find stories about how obese we have become as a country. Food is abundant here and experts agree that most of us eat a lot.

I have to agree that I do eat a lot myself. I love food, specially Thai food and anything with spice on it.

However, I’m a marathon runner. I can easily get my calorie intake under control with my regular runs.

But what about the others. I can only try and convince them (if given a chance) to give healthy living a try.

In these day and age there are plenty of opportunities to improve everyone’s health by design.

The advances in science has given us plenty of choices, products and services to achieve healthy goals. The growth of health gyms and the increasing number of health experts and personal coaches (believe it or not) has lead to a quite revolution in health and wellness  industry.

It’s not easy to just tell  someone, “Don’t dig your grave with your fork and knife”…

You see when I got got started in running, I was challenged to do a 3 miler before work. I gave it a try. I did and now I have 6 Los Angeles marathons under me.

Yes, I was digging my grave slowly then. I was overweight. My eating habits were out of whack.  Thanks to a few friends who got me going for the miles.

Today I still love my food but at the same time I continue to do 3-3milers during the week and at least an hour long runs on weekends.

Challenge your friend or a loved ones to get into some kind of exercise routine. Get them to be health positive. You never know…

You can tell them, “Don’t dig your grave with your fork and knife” or you may do it any other way. Come on you can do it!

Running Can Lower Sex Drive

male and female signs Running Can Lower Sex Drive“Whether or not running can lower sex drive, some argue that sex can actually improve running. Thirty-five national-caliber age-group runners from San Diego were recently asked whether they would have sex the night before a race: 70 percent said they would”. Read Full Article

Now, what do you think about that?

Running Can Lower Sex Drive – Their Opinion

In part, I agree with the authors comment that;

“…sex did go down as the miles increased, but it was due less to a lack of desire than to fatigue. One happily married couple I know got around the problem by just putting the wife on top. But others said that when mileage reached 110 or 115 miles a week they were just too tired to do anything else. As my friend Jeff put it, “I’m a garden hose for six or seven hours after a 20-miler.” Others were so used to high mileage that their desire adjusted. My coach, Kevin McCarey, ran for Athletics West from 1978-82. While he typically ran 125 miles a week during his time in Eugene, it never affected his performance or desire. “When you’re 25 years old nothing can stop you,” he recalls. “Everyone was so physical. Sex was part of being a runner.”

Running Can Lower Sex Drive – My Opinion

From my unscientific study, I have found that when training for marathon specially when the mileage really get to pile up big, the body will make adjustment and the desire is still there if not stronger. Actually, it relaxes me more and recovery is much faster after the sweetest thing. I don’t believe that running can lower sex drive at all. It actually raises it up a notch in my opinion.

Make sure it’s still done in moderation. To me that makes a big difference.

Vegetables Can Make You Sexy

“Once the word gets out that eating fruits and vegetables can make you sexy, attractive and maybe even look younger, hopefully, the carrots, kale and cantaloupe will be flying off the shelves and into people’s meals” that statement capped an article about the importance of eating vegetables.

Vegetables Can Make You Sexy – The Study

Now here’s the beginning argument,” The key to a rosy, healthy-looking complexion may be as simple as eating more fruits and vegetables, researchers say.

“We found that within a six-week period, fluctuation in fruit and vegetable consumption was associated with skin-color changes,” said lead researcher Ross Whitehead, from the School of Psychology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Not only did skin look healthier at the end of the study period, it was judged more attractive as well, he said. “Eat more fruits and veggies to improve your appearance,”…Read full article

Now for runners like us, I’m hoping that we have vegetables as part of our regular diet already. If not, consider adding 5-8 cups a day. That’s not easy to do but the experts have told us so.

Spinach Is Good For Runners?

Do you know that spinach is good for runners?

IMAG0438 300x200 Spinach Is Good For Runners?I was in a Chinese food restaurant one evening and my spouse was ordering spinach?

That’s right – spinach. I have to ask her why. She said, ” it’s got plenty of  potassium”. And, she needs a lot to replenish her loss of potassium due to some medications she is taking for her high blood pressure issues.

I was surprised and very happy to know at the same time.

This is actually good. Most runners (if not all) knows that potassium is key to recovery specially after a long run. Potassium with magnesium helps reduce cramps.

I love this information. You see, one fruit reach in potassium is banana. Most runners I know eat lots of bananas. Go to races like 5k’s, 10k’s and marathons and you’ll find bananas everywhere. That shouldn’t be a surprise…

Yes, Spinach Is Good For Runners

Now, I know I have another source a potassium that I never knew before.

Spinach’s nutrition is amazing. The calcium content in spinach and other dark leafy greens strengthens bones.

The A and C vitamins in spinach plus the fiber, folic acid, magnesium and other nutrients help control cancer, especially colon, lung and breast cancers. Folate also lowers the blood levels of something called homocysteine, a protein that damages arteries. So spinach also helps protect against heart disease.

The flavonoids in spinach help protect against age related memory loss.

Spinach’s secret weapon, lutein, makes it one of the best foods in the world to prevent cataracts, as well as age related macular degeneration, the leading cause of preventable blindness in the elderly. Foods rich in lutein are also thought to help prevent cancer.

I don’t want to bore you with too much info on spinach but I think we have a winner.

Spinach is good for runners! Remember this whenever you’re in for a Chinese food next time.

Glucosamine For Aching Runners Joint

glucosamine for runners joint Glucosamine For Aching Runners JointIf your joints have you walking around like the tin man from The Wizard of Oz, you  may be considering glucosamine for aching runners joint.

Well, you’re far from being alone. Glucosamine happens to be the #1 top selling supplement in the world. Sure, an aging nation with weak joints plays a major role –but running enthusiasts are also top users of this controversial supplement. The reason that glucosamine is controversial is not because it’s claims are completely unjustified – it’s that there’s so much conflicting research. Despite being one of the most intensely researched supplements of all time (with a whopping 1500+ research studies), there remains a lack of conclusive evidence for or against its use.

How Does Glucosamine For Aching Runners Joint Work

Here are some of the claims you’ll read if you’ll do research online;

1. Reduces joint pain. This is clearly glucosamine’s most important health claim. It’s nice
that glucosamine can reduce inflammation in a lab, but it doesn’t mean a thing if you still wake up stiff as a board. Although there have been literally hundreds of Glucosamine
studies concluding that it is an effective natural pain reliever, most of them are now considered bunk because they didn’t use a placebo. It turns out that the placebo effect for pain relievers like glucosamine is extremely high. Nevertheless, this is probably one reason why glucosamine for aching runners joint is popular.

2. Builds stronger cartilage and joint tissue. Glucosamine has been shown to make joints
stronger. It helps in bolstering production of new joint cells and preventing joint cells from an early death. Amazingly, glucosamine directly interacts with your genes, shutting off the enzymes that are programmed to kill joint cells. In the long run, this leads to a “net positive balance” of joint tissue –translating to burly, strong joints that can take on the wear specially on runners.

3. Treats osteoarthritis. Although osteoarthritis tends to affect mostly older folks, that doesn’t mean young runners are immune to this debilitating condition. Years of high impact sports like marathon running or track and field can do a number on your joints. Should you consider glucosamine for aching runners joint early on? Who knows, in fact, osteoarthritis simply means “inflammation in the joints”. As is its trademark, the results of glucosamine research in the treatment of osteoarthritis are inconclusive. Some studies show that is helps people in pain get back on their feet, and some have shown that it’s all in the subject’s heads.

4. Reduces Inflammation: You can track almost every chronic disease, from heart disease to a bad back, to inflammation. In fact, popular over the counter drugs like Tylenol and Ibuprofen work by blocking the enzymes that ramp up inflammation. It turns out that glucosamine does the same thing, only naturally. A number of studies have shown that glucosamine is able to reduce harmful inflammation in a test tube and in the human body.

My Take On Glucosamine For Aching Runners Joint

It will be years before there’s any clarity regarding glucosamine. If you look at the research data, you’ll find that glucosamine works tremendously well for some, and does nothing for others. Scientists are forced to aggregate the data and come up with a broad based conclusion, but you aren’t. You may be one of the “outliers” who feels like a million bucks after taking glucosamine. Does that mean glucosamine for aching runners joint is really good for you?

The only way to tell is to try it yourself. Understand that some of your relief will be a
placebo effect – after all you’re only human. But if you can get back running the next day  pain-free again, does it really matter whether it’s the glucosamine or your hopeful mind? After all, glucosamine is generally well tolerated and comes with an extremely low risk of side effects.

If you’re frustrated with the joint treatments you’ve tried thus far, you may want to give glucosamine for aching runners joint a shot.

Is Beer Good For Runners?

nutrition mix 277x300 Is Beer Good For Runners?Have you ever seen banners or signs along a race route that really caught your attention? I’ve seen some interesting signs through the years. Lately I saw one that says, ” beer at the finish line – you’re almost there”.

When I saw the sign at mile 23, I told myself I want a beer right now – not later!

I’d like to hear from an expert…Is Beer Good for Runners?

I’ve always believed everything in moderation is good. A beer after a run is something that I do once in a while. How about you?

I have study from PubMed.gov and the title is, Non-Alcoholic Beer Reduces Inflammation and Incidence of Respiratory Track Illness

Here’s the bottom line;

CONCLUSION:

Consumption of 1-1.5 L/day non-alcoholic beer for three weeks before and two weeks after marathon competition reduces post-race inflammation and URTI incidence.

Can You Demolish The Wall?

If you’re a marathon runner you have heard The Wall.

No we’re not talking the Great Wall of China but the Wall when most marathon runners  feel or think like they can’t continue anymore. This is when the body and mind collide and giving up seems the only option.

THEWALL Can You Demolish The Wall?

A Marathon Runners Nightmare

Every runner have a story to tell how they’ve hit the wall during a marathon.
My question is, Can you (or anybody) demolish The Wall?

Lets see what and expert has to say about it. Here’s an article from Running Bug

Psychologist, trainer and coach, Ken Way works with top athletes using the mental training techniques he has developed to help them achieve their goals. But, he tells us, it’s not only the elite who can apply these methods to perform at their best.

Forget the Great Wall of China and Hadrian’s Wall, the world’s biggest barrier is the wall thousands of athletes run into every year when competing in marathons. It’s not only the elite who encounter The Wall, almost everyone who takes on a training programme that challenges them will know the feeling of reaching that point when you feel you like you can’t continue. [READ the Full Article]

Going back to individual story on the wall, mine is something like…”what happen here, I thought I saw mile twenty-one (21) already, this is not good, I knew I’m in big big trouble, but I have five more to go or maybe more.”

My buddy who finished the race like one (1) hour ago is back on the course. He’s trying to motivate, encourage and doing everything he can to keep me back on track – to life. It was not the best of situation but the best at the same time.

I finished the race in under 5 hours that day. The finish line looks like a war zone. People were sprawled all over this big parking lot or street and looking like a mess. This is one of the hottest temperature running the Los Angeles Marathon. Yep, I have hit the wall but this I remembered!

How’s your wall encounter?

Electrolytes by FLEE

Lately I’ve been doing more long runs over 10 miles as I continue to train for the next Los Angeles marathon next March ’10.

As the miles start to pile up, my hydration needs changes. I do have few mixes and a couple of favorite drinks I take on a regular basis from my online store. However, I always look for other products in order not to miss out on anything that may be new in the sports nutrition market, just in case.

I was reading an article about electrolytes and here’s an interesting take from one expert. He starts with the following;

Why do we see pro athletes guzzling down the Gatorade or whatever other liquids they have on the sidelines? Is all that needed or is it hype?
